EARTH COMMISSION PHASE ONE: FIVE WORKING GROUPS DEFINING A SAFE AND JUST CORRIDOR

To provide a holistic people-planet framework – taking into account the complex interactions between natural and social systems, justice, and human well-being – the Earth Commissions convened five international working groups of experts during its first phase.

EARTH AND HUMAN SYSTEMS MODELLING

Modelling a safe and just corridor for people and planet informed the setting of targets for planetary and human systems.

BIOSPHERE INTERACTIONS

This group investigated organisms of key importance for ecosystem function and how changes in the living nature affect Earth and societies.

NUTRIENTS AND POLLUTION

The “Nutrient and Pollutions” group studied how changes in nutrient cycles can affect the stability and resilience of the Earth and undermine the safe and just corridor.

TRANSFORMATIONS

Integrating the justice aspects was key here, exploring trade-offs between social and environmental goals as well as levers of transformation.

TRANSLATION AND METHODS

This working group looked into the scientific challenges of translating global targets into science based targets for local-scale actors.
