New report: Governance for a safe and just world

10/10/2024

What are the implications for governance of Earth system justice and Earth system boundaries? What are the transformations necessary to live within the safe and just space, where everybody on the planet is able to live a life free from poverty?

A new report, led by Earth Commissioners Joyeeta Gupta and Diana Liverman, offers a pathway to managing Earth’s resources justly while meeting the basic needs of all.

The Governance Architecture for a Safe and Just World report outlines a governance model that respects Earth system boundaries while addressing inequality.

It builds on Earth system justice principles, highlighting the need for global governance to ensure equitable resource distribution. It stresses the importance of transforming global governance structures, emphasizing a justice-centered approach to how resources like water, energy, and food are shared.

By redefining governance at local, national, and global levels, the report argues that we can prevent further environmental degradation and meet the basic needs of all.

The report was developed with support from the Global Challenges Foundation.
